Pittsburgh was a brewing city long before the word 'craft' entered the vocabulary. German and Eastern European immigrants built dozens of breweries here in the 1800s, Iron City became shorthand for the region itself, and the collapse and rebirth of local brewing tracks the story of the city almost beat for beat. This collection digs into that history and the culture it left behind. We work from the published historical record — brewery histories, newspaper archives, and local historical societies — and we're careful to separate documented fact from barroom legend. Where the record is thin or contested, we say so plainly rather than inventing a tidier story.
